Comprehensive Educational Curriculum
Theoretical Concepts and Laboratory Experience
Theoretical Concepts and Laboratory Experience:The RNFA program is designed to
provide the student with the necessary knowledge and skills to function as the first
assistant to the surgeon before, during, and after surgical procedures. Based on the
Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) Core Curriculum, this 3 credit
theoretical concepts and laboratory course guides the student toward a synthesis of
content from nursing and related sciences and the application of this knowledge to the
role of RN First Assistant.
Clinical Practicum
Following completion of the Theoretical Concepts and Laboratory Experience course,
the student participates directly in 120 hours of preoperative, interoperative, and
postoperative patient management under the supervision of a board-certified surgeon.
Following the completion of both courses in the RNFA program, the student is awarded
a certificate of RNFA status.
Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA)
The Advanced Surgical Assistant Group (ASAG), in affiliation with the Moraine Valley
Community College (a highly recognized leader in education), offers this instructional
program to Operating Room and Advanced Practice nurses.

The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) program is designed to provide the
student with the necessary knowledge and skills to function as the first assistant to the
surgeon before, during, and after surgical procedures. Based on the Association of
Operating Room Nurses (AORN) Core Curriculum, the 5-day classroom/laboratory
course guides the student toward a synthesis of content from nursing and related
sciences and the application of this knowledge to the role of RN First Assistant.

During the subsequent clinical practicum course, the student participates directly in 120
hours of preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative patient management under the
supervision of a board-certified surgeon. Following the completion of both courses in
the RNFA program, the student is awarded a certificate of RNFA status.
